Whoops, I missed a week!
Okay, back on track now, with a new Lady Gaga smash up style remix (”Love Game” mashed with “Dangerous” by Kardinal Offishall, featuring Akon. It’s more Love Game than Dangerous tho). In stark contrast to the Pokerface mashup, this one’s uptempo and highly danceable.
I came up with the idea to mash Love Game and Dangerous cuz they played them back to back on the radio
I threw it together in a couple hours cuz I haven’t done a mashup in a while and needed to get it done fast, as I’ve gotta spend most of this week putting together my set for the party at Etiquette this Friday, June 5th (if you’re in San Francisco you should come! it’s gonna be awesome. I’m opening at 9pm, and then DJ Tyme is taking over. Plus we’ll be doing our live set at some point during the party. Here’s the event on facebook: The Mash Up Smash Up Mix Up. And here’s Etiquette’s website.
Back to the song… In the interest of finishing it quickly, I used the Jody Den Broeder club mix of Love Game for the main beat, rather than producing my own. I couldn’t resist dropping in a couple trademark Nathan Scot bass drops though.

Here’s the new song! It’s actually an older song from a few months ago, before I started this site. The song I was going to post today has been uncooperative in getting finished on time
Mostly because I’ve been focusing so much on last weekend’s CD release party (which was awesome, if you weren’t there or listening in on the live broadcast) and couldn’t focus much energy on writing. By the way, I’ll have the CD available here on the site soon!
On to this week’s song. It’s a really simple triphop-inspired piece. There’s not a whole lot going on, but it does have a really nice relaxing feel to it. Probably the one thing I’d change is adding more variety to the drums, it’s pretty much the same pattern throughout the whole song.
I’ve actually been looking at this song as a building block for some other ideas… but you’ll have to wait for that!
Cheers,
Nathan
Update! - I posted this on Youtube. It’s just the music, but go watch it there anyway! I’ll be happy if you help my number of views go up
Finally got the new remix up! It’s been a looong day. I was up late last night doing some last minute edits on the song and was exhausted at work all day. And THEN my car broke down on the drive home! It was actually kinda funny, all the electronics went haywire which somehow resulted in the windshield wipers turning themselves on. I had to limp back home with my flashers on (no turn signals! or power steering). When I pulled the fusebox, and re-plugged it in, everything worked again. Huh, must’ve been something loose or maybe the ridiculous heat today.
Anyway, I’m still not sure what I think of this one. It’s definitely “quirky”. I decided to do something a little different and did the remix using the acoustic version of Poker Face that Lady Gaga recorded at Cherrytree Records. What do you think?
So I knew that Lady Gaga was a pianist, but hadn’t seen her play before I found the Cherrytree videos on Youtube. Which are awesome, by the way. Being a pianist myself, I’m now an even bigger Lady Gaga fan! Check out her original performance:
Anyway, so the whole idea with this remix was to build the song back up after it had been broken down. I started messing around with the chorus and added a second piano, (hence “Duet”, haha) Though if you want to get technical that’s a piano duo rather than a duet. Whatever, I like “Duet” better.
The hard part was wrestling Gaga’s live performance into something I could stick a beat onto, and still maintain the live feel. I think I did a pretty decent job of it.
Bah, too tired to post this on Youtube just yet. Let me know what you think! I’m especially interested in how my stuff sounds on other speakers. I always think it sounds pretty good here at the studio (and I’ve got a pretty tricked out set-up… fancy acoustic panels and such) but my ears always start playing tricks on me towards the end of the mixing and mastering.
Cheers!

Hey friends,
Ironically, after four years of messing around with music production, the first song I’m putting up is a remix! Go figure. The next song up will be an original. Think classical-inspired downtempo electronic, a la Air or Boards of Canada, but with a heavy focus on piano and harmonic contrast. That’s coming up in two weeks…
But for now, enjoy Straight Up with Nathan Scot! It’s a super-fun smash-up style remix of Paula Abdul’s late 80s hit, and guaranteed to make you dance. This one’s definitely for the ladies.
It’s actually a pretty simple remix when you get into it. I chopped the song up a bit and wrote a new bass and kick drum beat to go along with it. Add a couple string swells and some reverse kick drums, and bump the tempo up a bit, and you’ve got a banging new song! It’s such a well-known song, so the trick was to work WITH the song, and just give it a bit more of a modern sound.
If you like it, make sure to go to my YouTube page and give me a five star rating!

Also, please leave me a comment and tell me what you thought! I really appreciate your feedback on this, and everything else I’ll be posting.
Alright, see you in two weeks with a brand new original song. There’ll be some more updates before then though, especially since my buddy DJ Tyme and I are gonna be releasing our masterwork three-disc mix series “Mash Up Smash Up Mix Up” on May 1st. More posts on that soon!
Cheers,
Nathan
A little over fifteen years ago I wrote my first song. Sketched out on staff paper. I must have been around ten years old or so.
A little over four years ago I discovered music software. I started spending all my time learning everything there was to know about audio production. Finished some songs, and a whole lot more incompleted. But I kept putting off letting the music free. Just not ready yet. Not quite perfect.
And a little over an hour ago, I realized that now is the time. Truth is, my buddy DJ Tyme needed my website for a flyer he was putting together for our upcoming show. My first live gig as a music producer.
So it’s been fifteen years in the making, and about damn time. I’m letting go of the fear and self-doubt. My music needs to be set free.
I’ve got a mission now. There’s going to be a new song up here every two weeks. It may be a original or a remix, but I’m going to finish my music and get it out.
I don’t know where this is going to lead, but it sure as hell is gonna be one sweet ride.
Wanna come along?
